DAMON DAY'S CREATIVE WRITING PORTFOLIO
Noire is a gamejam project developed by SuperAwesome Games for the Metroidvania GameJam. In this project, I was the Narrative Designer and Junior Level Designer. I laid out the GDD and created the scope and theme of the game. Play it here!
Noire's primary theme was: play as the monster. And we wanted a story that would let the player be something inhuman, but also still familiar. In Noire, this is shown through Noire, the character's, actions, as they can absorb powers from the enemies, something no human can do, but still reacts to events through the player.
But there's only so much we can do with a silent protag, so this is where the lore entries came in. Some were hidden, but most were meant to be found. I wanted to create entries that would explain the background lore in a way that the player would be able to figure out without a big info dump. In other words: piecemeal info. The lore was given to the player, but never all at once. All in all, I think it worked well! The reviews liked the narrative, which I took as a good sign.
In Noire, you play as the titular character. A shadow creature with a syringe on a mission to cleanse LC.
As the Narrative Designer, I came up with the name and the background lore of the game.
And fun fact! All of the entries written in Noire had authors named after famous horror icons. Can you guess what LC stands for?
